Money Mangement and Risk
This is a subject that
gets paid a lot of lip service but is rarely given the neccessary level
of importance in most peoples trading.
The problem is often that
trading is viewed as a "get rich quick" solution, or a "part-time" way
to make money. Whilst it can be both for successful and experienced
traders, for people coming into trading it's a recipe for disaster.
The problem is this....
You see a website saying that this guy, "made 350pips last week in just 45 minutes trading", or "this system had 87% winning trades"... and so on.
It sets completetly the wrong impression of what real trading is actually like.
Come on... really... if it was that easy how come your grannie isn't doing it?
Maybe the statements are true
(it is possible) but they certainly don't tell the whole truth.
Perhaps the 45 minutes of trading was the actual time in trades, but
the guy spent 30 hours looking at a screen to get those trades. Or the
87% winning trades have winners that are only half the size of the
losers, and so on (thereby only breaking-even in the long run)
Why do you need to understand what "real" tradung is like?
Because then you'll realise that you can, no, you will have runs of
losing trades as part of making profits. Even a system that has 65%
winning trades will have a run of 6 or 7 losers at some point - that's
when most traders "give-up" or, blow their accounts, and is the major
reason to have proper money management in place.
What is Proper Money Management?
Simply, it's trading the
corrrect size on every trade, it's about only risking price moving
against you enough to tell you that the trade is wrong, it's about
being disciplined enough to get out of losing trades as soon as
possible and yet staying in winning trades until the market has
provided the majority of what it is going to give.
It's a relatively simple subject and without it you will not survive long in trading.
You can find out about Risk/Reward and Winners/Losers in the Free Course on the Left of this page.
